Mazda builds the enthusiast’s version of the sensible car — Mazda3s and CX-5s that actually enjoy corners, and the Miata, which needs no introduction. The SkyActiv engineering underneath is clever, efficient, and particular in a few ways worth knowing.
At All About Imports, Mazdas have been steady company since 2011 — SkyActiv era included — at independent-shop prices.
Start with a genuine Mazda advantage: while most of the industry moved to CVTs, Mazda stuck with conventional automatic transmissions. That means no CVT-specific anxieties — though conventional automatics still age their fluid, and Mazda’s own specified ATF on schedule remains the quiet key to their longevity.
SkyActiv engines run high compression and direct injection to earn their efficiency — and direct injection carries the known industry trait of gradual carbon accumulation on intake valves over higher mileages. It is a characteristic, not a defect: awareness on higher-mileage examples showing rough cold idle or softened performance is the practical takeaway. Mazda’s specific FL-22 coolant and fluid requirements follow the familiar import rule — the spec matters.
And because Mazdas are tuned for drivers, their brakes and suspension work harder and communicate more — which means wear gets noticed sooner in a Mazda than in softer cars. Owners tend to feel the decline; the fix is putting back the precision the car came with.

By All About Imports — Denton’s Import Specialists
Mazda owners notice their cars — that is why they bought them — which makes them the easiest customers to serve honestly: when the work is right, the car tells them. SkyActiv patterns, correct fluids, and the driving feel restored are the standing standard here. We are a family-owned Denton shop, serving Mazda owners since 2011.
From a commuter Mazda3 to a weekend Miata, the care is the same: precise, documented, and priced like an independent shop.
Happily, no — because Mazda largely skipped CVTs and stayed with conventional automatic transmissions. That removes an entire category of worry. The trade discipline still applies though: conventional automatics age their fluid too, and Mazda specifies its own ATF for good reason. On-schedule fluid service is what keeps that advantage an advantage.
Worry is too strong; awareness is right. SkyActiv engines use direct injection, and the industry-wide trait of that design is gradual carbon accumulation on intake valves over higher mileages — fuel additives cannot clean valves the fuel never touches. If a higher-mileage example develops a rough cold idle or softer performance, deposits are worth ruling in or out with a proper assessment.
Delightfully, the opposite. The Miata is one of the most mechanically honest cars sold — simple, robust, and built from proven components. Its maintenance needs are ordinary and its parts situation is healthy. The main thing a Miata asks of its owner is to actually drive it, which we consider a fair deal.
Bring your Mazda to the shop that works on them every day.
